My Five Year Journey

The problem with gyms, fitness magazines, websites, and ads is that they show pictures of these super fit people expecting to draw people into whatever program or product they’re selling. Most people look at those pictures and think, I could never do what they do. I could never look like that. They put all the focus on outward appearance. Today, I am going to humble myself to show you and talk about where I came from.

We all have a past. We all have our reasons why we are where we are. How I got to the point five years ago of being severely overweight and unhealthy doesn’t matter. What matters is the day I decided to change that. If you want to look different than you did yesterday, you have to do something different. If you want to feel better, you have to change something. You can’t keep doing the same thing and expect different results.

I decided one day to change my diet. The end. Journey is done. I’m skinny now. No, it’s not that simple. I had to get up the next day and decide again. I had to do that every day for a week, then a month, then three months. At the end of three months I was down about 15 or 20 pounds, my daily headaches were gone, my forever acne had cleared up, and a lot of other health issues were going away. That was when I decided I didn’t care about the number on the scale. It was all about how I felt. That made the daily decision just a little bit easier the next day. I’ve had to keep making that decision every day for the last five years. You know what, some days I make the wrong choice. Do I let that influence my decision the next day? No. I get up the next day and make the right choice again. Having a piece of birthday cake every now and again will not derail your whole journey. Having a large bowl of ice cream every single night will.

Then one day, I decided to exercise. I thought that changing my diet had changed my life. It had, but it was nothing compared to my fitness journey. Growing up, I was one of the smart kids. Everything was about my schoolwork. I never got the Presidential physical fitness award. I was never able to run a mile. I did enjoy dancing and swimming. Those two things did keep me from being overweight as a child. I made an attempt to play basketball for a couple years. As a 13 year old girl who was six feet tall, it was kind of expected of me. It did not go well.

In the fall of 2011 I decided my kids needed to start getting some more exercise. The best way to accomplish that was to do it with them.

I couldn’t run a mile. I couldn'tdo a burpee (didn’t even know what that was). I could do a couple sit ups and push ups from my knees. I could get the 20 pound kettle bell over my head, but certainly not the 25. It’s amazing what a difference five pounds makes. I had to start where I was and do what I could. Just like with my diet, I had to decide every day to get up and make an effort.

After three months, I ran half a mile. Then, shortly after that, I ran a whole mile. That was three years ago. Since then I have run two full 26.2 mile marathons and several half marathons. I've gone from not being able to get 25 pounds over my head to regularly lifting 65 or 75 pounds over my head.

I feel strong. I feel empowered. I feel like I can do anything.

Three years ago, I did my first obstacle course race. I had to skip half the obstacles. With hard work, I was finally able to make it across the monkey bars about a year and a half later. I am now able to do a pull up and climb a rope. I couldn’t even do that in elementary school.

I will say it again. It’s not about the number on the scale. It’s about health, both physical and mental. It’s about confidence. It’s about enjoying the journey. It’s about my son telling me he wants to run a 5k, and me saying sure we can do that together. It’s about my husband and I entering a contest together and only competing against each other, pushing each other to get better. It’s about living life to the fullest every single day.

Most of all, it’s about the fact that now I get to help others realize their potential as well.
