Giving it Your All

Want to defeat a challenge? Want to accomplish a goal? Do you want something?

You need to give it your all and you might get what you want. Even if you don't reach your goals you still become more along the way.

It's called WIN / WIN.

Years ago I was in a triathlon in Franconia, New Hampshire. "Race to the Face" off road triathlon. An uphill mountain bike ride of around 7 miles then a frigged mountain lake swim for 1/2 mile then up the ski slopes to the top on Canon Mountain. (The mountain whose claim to fame is that the "Old Man in the Mountain" was once on it's face.)

A tough race for sure.

The first few miles of the bike leg were on flat road followed but a couple of brutal asphalt hills. It didn't take long for a group of 4 guys to form. I had pretty good biking legs back in those days. I was feeling good and riding along strong in this group. We hammered up the hill and things got pretty tough for me.

I was giving it my all.

Let me set the stage a little for you.

Who was I riding with?

At the time I tried my hardest to stay with them even though I know EXACTLY who they were.

There was Ward. Ward hard won a similar race the year before. He passed me in the last mile on that day. He was professional road cyclist. Strong dude for sure.

There was Matt. Matt had won the WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP the year before in my age group in the sport of off road triathlon. Good runner, decent swimmer, pro level biker. Two years later but would become a professional triathlete.

Then there was Ryan. Ryan would also become a professional triathlete in the coming years. He was a great swimmer to go along with his biking and running pedigree.

These are the 3 guys that I was riding with; pretty good company to say the least.

I remember the race like it was yesterday. For the fist 30 minutes of a bike leg that would take 45 I hung with these guys. I was giving it my all.

What challenge do you face against a formidable foe? What battle do you need to face that you know is going to be hard but you KNOW YOU MUST FIGHT THIS BATTLE?

Life isn't always going to be easy. Sometimes you might lose a battle but, in the end, if you give you best you will ALWAYS come back and win the war.

By the end of the bike leg I was in 4th. Matt and Ward were a minute up and Ryan was 45 seconds ahead. I caught Ward a mile into the run up the mountain. I never saw Matt and Ryan again as they finished 1-2 a couple of minutes ahead.

So I finished 3rd and got beat by 2 guys. So what?

There were 400+ people in the race that finished behind me,

A pretty good day by almost any measure.

I share this personal story today with you for a reason. I know how hard it can be when "victory" doesn't even seem possible. The battle is hard and you can't even conceive of a way to finish on top.

It doesn't matter that the outcome looks like. YOU MUST FIGHT AS HARD AS YOU CAN. When you do you will come out on top in the end.

If you don't fight then you will never know, will you?

If you got value out of this short article please share with your friends. Sometimes it's just a little spark that people need to start a fire. You just might change a life,

THANK YOU.
